Can you believe it? Cells, generally plant cells, also store large amounts of water, nutrients, as well as water. Vacuole provides for such storage. These fluid filled spaces enclosed by membranes must be a sight to behold! But, do not be shocked by your imagination. They are vital for the cells. The pressure exerted by this stored water acts as a sort of “skeleton” for the plant keeping it rigid. This rigidity allows a plant to stand upright; so, when a plant’s vacuoles lack water, you have seen it, it will become limp and weak. If you care for your plants, make sure that their vacuoles do have water and provide the plants the support and nourishment they need. They are relatively inexpensive, so keep them handy.
